A Serene Transitional Bedroom You’ll Love
A good night’s sleep starts with great design. When it comes to bedrooms, our goal is always to create a space that encourages peace, rest, and relaxation. Our main focus is on finishes and materials that evoke a sense of calm and understated luxury.
Transitional design is one of our favorite styles to work with because it strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern. It’s timeless, fresh, elegant, and comfortable making it ideal for a bedroom that feels personal, functional, and beautiful. If you’re unsure about your design style, take our complimentary quiz to find out.
Your paint color makes a big difference. You want to go for soft blues, soothing greens, and warm neutrals as your go-to palettes—they’re naturally calming to the eye and help set the perfect atmosphere for rest. Just remember to select this last after you've selected all other fabrics.

Now, let’s keep exploring all the elements that make the perfect transitional bedroom.
1. Bedding & Textiles
The foundation of any serene bedroom is the bedding. Your goal should be to look for soft, high-quality sheets and layered textures, like a cozy duvet, quilted coverlets, and a few well-placed throw pillows. We recommend sticking to a palette of muted blues, greens, and neutrals for a cohesive, calming effect.
To make your design easier, here’s a tip: start with a white or neutral duvet or quilt as your foundation, then layer in pillows in your chosen accent colors.
Notice how we applied this principle in our Cozy Chic Bungalow Project. Our client’s goal was to elevate their bedding, and we wanted to recreate a hotel boutique look with a luxury touch. We sourced new bedding, with beautiful custom pillows, one of which features an animal print, which my client favored.
The result is a high-end look, right in the comfort of your own home!
2. Furniture
Furniture pieces are key to creating a serene bedroom. You want to use pieces that are clean, functional, and timeless. For example, a low-profile upholstered bed or a streamlined wooden dresser can anchor the space without feeling heavy. You can mix modern transitional pieces by pairing classic styles with contemporary finishes. This way, you’ll create a look that’s versatile and perfect for any design aesthetic.
Take our Dreamy Tween Bedroom Project, for example. Our client needed an upgrade because her daughter had outgrown her child's bedroom, and the goal was to create a space that felt cozy while incorporating some personalized pieces, ensuring it would remain a room for many years to come. One of the elements that helped us do that was the furniture.
We found the perfect blush pink bench to place at the foot of the bed, which really adds a touch of luxury. The matching dresser and nightstand, with the woven cane details, also bring in texture for warmth.
One challenge we faced was fitting in a swinging chair that our client wanted. Our contractor added extra bracing between the attic joists to hang the swing. Now this tween has a spot to unwind and relax in her dreamy room, how cool is that?
3. Window Treatments
Custom window treatments can transform a bedroom, adding softness, light control, and style. One of our recommendations is to opt for Roman shades or flowing drapery panels in a neutral fabric, which will bring texture while keeping the room light and airy. Drapes can also add a sense of height to the space, enhancing the feeling of openness.
Take a look at what we did in our
Warm and Timeless Traditional Project. We carried a Roman shade through for both light control and privacy, then layered drapery panels on either side. These panels introduce an extra layer of softness and texture, while also elevating the overall look of the room.
4. Lighting
Lighting sets the mood for your entire bedroom. The key here is to layer your lighting for function and ambiance. You can pair a statement ceiling fixture with soft bedside lamps or elegant wall sconces for a cohesive look. Try warm bulbs to create a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.
Here’s a designer tip for you: consider installing dimmers so you can adjust the brightness according to your mood or the time of day.
In the bedroom of our
Warm and Timeless Traditional Project, we chose a classic look with a touch of charm. We sourced taller, sleeker lamps, for the nightstands, to enhance the lighting and strategically placed mirrors behind them to help reflect the light. Additionally, we added a statement light fixture next to the table, which our client will use for studying, just as they requested.
5. Accessories & Accents
Accessories are the finishing touch that brings your design to life. Keep them intentional and minimal, for example, a beautiful piece of art, a textured area rug, or a ceramic vase adds personality without overwhelming the space.
Stick to natural materials like wood, linen, and ceramics to keep the overall look grounded and serene. Remember: a few well-chosen accents can elevate your space more than a lot of decor.
In our Cozy Chic Bungalow Project, we sourced large artwork for the walls to bring a touch of nature and greenery, which always brings a room to life. We swapped out the rug for a new one with more color to tie everything together.
Lastly, we included a floor mirror and a small mirror over the bed to help increase the natural light. The magic is all in the details, and our client is so happy with how everything turned out!
Our Transitional Style Bedroom Inspiration
Now it’s time to bring it all together! Take a look at some of the elements we took to create our own bedroom design in this mood board.
- The first thing you may notice are the color palettes. Soft shades of blues and grays, with a touch of gold, for a relaxing and comfortable look.
- We also added different textures for contrast and to create balance. The wood from the nightstands and the greenery add warmth.
- You may also notice different lighting layers that contribute to the overall design. Functionality and aesthetics play a significant role when it comes to lighting.
- Last but not least, the large stand mirror increases the lighting and increases the room’s size.
- The large area rug helps to tie everything together.
