What Nobody Tells You About Renovating

Scrolling before-and-after photos of renovations can make the process look easy. One day, there’s an outdated space, and the next day, it’s a stunning transformation.

But anyone who has been through this process knows there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes.

The truth is that renovations come with surprises. Plans and timelines change, and unexpected challenges pop up along the way; none of this means something has gone wrong; it’s just part of transforming a home.

At An Inspiring Home, one of our most important roles is to guide our clients through these situations, turning challenges into solutions. Today, we’re sharing a few things nobody tells you about renovating, along with real project examples that show how these situations unfold.

What Nobody Tells You About Renovating

While renovation challenges can sound scary, they are actually what make a project successful.

Great design isn’t about everything going perfectly. It’s about responding when surprises happen.

With the right planning, communication, and expertise, those challenges become opportunities to create something even better than originally imagined. It's like being one step ahead from the start, knowing what to expect so that we can address it properly.

In our experience, here are the most common things that will happen when you’re renovating your home that no one is talking about:

  1. Mess and interruptions
  2. Delays
  3. Design changes
  4. Layout adjustments
  5. Budget changes

We’ll go through each one and explain how we tackle it with our approach and recommendations.

What Nobody Tells You About Renovating

1. Construction Brings Mess and Interruptions

Renovation is exciting, but it also comes with noise, dust, and temporary disruption. Even the most organized construction project will affect your daily life in some way.

That’s why we always encourage homeowners to have a backup plan during construction. Sometimes that means setting up a temporary kitchen, planning alternative routines, or just preparing mentally for the fact that the house may feel chaotic for a while.

The key is remembering that this phase is temporary, and the finished results are worth it.

2. Delays

Delays are inevitable, and even after everything is mapped out to “perfection’ there could be certain elements that may delay a project.

Orders and Deliveries:

Suppliers may sometimes take longer to ship certain items, even when we order everything in advance. For example, in one of our most recent projects, a kitchen renovation, we are still waiting on some of the appliances, which we need to be installed before our contractor can finish the tile work. In the meantime, please enjoy a peek at our client's primary bathroom renovation. That marble tile is so beautiful!

All of these delays are factors beyond our control and can disrupt the original plan.

Needing Additional Staff

During construction, we may need additional staff to help us complete a task or part of the project.  For example, in our Project Modern Fairway Views, we had a gas fireplace installation that required additional work and coordination with HVAC professionals. These types of works aren’t unusual, but they can add time to a project as teams work through the safest and most effective solution.

Doing it On Your Own.

There’s nothing wrong with doing the project yourself; the only thing you need to consider is that you’re losing time. Because this project is an add on of your daily life, sometimes, if not commonly, they’re certainly not a priority.

We have run into this case in one of our most recent projects. Our clients are doing the living room on their own, but because they haven’t finished the renovation, we cannot install furniture, hence it’s slowing down the final project. However, we are excited to see this room come together very soon!

While delays are inevitable, knowing which step to take next is easier when you have a designer on board to provide clarity and help you make the best decisions for your space.

Design Changes

One of the most common surprises in renovation is realizing that the original idea may not work exactly as planned.

Take our Project  Modern Fairway Views, where the kitchen had a two-sided linear fireplace between the kitchen and the family room. Our initial thought was to update the fireplace with a contemporary design.

However, while sourcing for options, we discovered that they were limited, so we decided to change the original plan and cover the kitchen fireplace side with a wooden panel and some art, and source another fireplace.

We also had situations where our clients looked at a specific design element and wanted us to include it in their design. As designers, it’s our job to consider our clients’ wishes, but we also need to adjust the original plan to make sure everything falls into place.

Designers provide drawings and specifications, so contractors know exactly what to install. When a change happens in the middle of the project, we need to update all of these documents so everyone working on the space stays aligned.

This is why communication among homeowners, designers, and contractors helps prevent confusion and keeps the project running smoothly.

4. Layout Adjustments

Another thing many homeowners don’t realize is how often layouts change during renovation. Sometimes these layout changes can become a limiting factor for a designer, making it necessary to find new ideas to improve functionality.

These decisions may not always be visible in the final photos, but they are often what make a space truly work for everyday life.

5. Budget Changes

All of the scenarios we've mentioned before can impact our budget. When changes happen during construction, contractors will issue a change order.

A change order updates the project scope and reflects any additional cost or labor required to complete the new request.

Budget is one of the areas that designers work carefully with clients before construction begins. We recommend having something extra so that when these situations happen, they won't come as a total surprise. The Real Secret to a Successful Renovation

At the end of the day, while renovating your home is an exciting opportunity, unexpected moments are part of the journey. But having a clear design direction and an experienced team guiding the project makes all the difference.

Planning helps reduce stress, keeps projects moving forward, and ensures that every decision leads to a cohesive and beautiful result. If a renovation is on your mind, we’d love to help you create a plan that brings your vision to life.
