When you’re renovating any room in your home, you’ll come across the latest design trends. They’re easy to follow, look great, and seem appealing simply because everyone else is doing them.

What people don’t often tell you is that trends are easy to overdo. Once everyone jumps on them, they quickly become overused and, all of a sudden, start to feel outdated.

Here’s the truth: trends come and go. If you’re planning a renovation, especially in your kitchen or bathroom, you want to invest in design elements that will have a lasting effect in your home. That’s what I want to share with you today. Before you plan your next renovation, read through to the end, because I’m about to share valuable insights that can save you a few headaches down the road.

If you love to follow trends, here’s the best advice: use them sparingly. The best way is to create a home that feels classic, and the best styles that fit that category are transitional and traditional, which you can apply in multiple ways.

Let's take wallpaper as an example.

First of all, if you love wallpaper, use it in your home. We certainly use it in all our designs. However, we don't feel the need to put it in every room.

In my own home, you'll find wallpaper in the formal living room, dining room, and powder bath. Those spaces feel special because the wallpaper is used intentionally. If it were throughout the entire house, I might not appreciate it nearly as much.

When I think about timeless elements in a kitchen or bath, this is what comes to mind:

  • Natural stone
  • Polished nickel finishes
  • Hardwood flooring
  • Subway tile
  • Layers of lighting

Let’s explore each category in detail.

Natural Stone

There is a reason people have used natural stone for centuries.

If you travel through Europe, you'll find buildings hundreds or thousands of years old, featuring marble floors, columns, fireplaces, and architectural details that still look beautiful today. Natural stone has a character and authenticity that other materials don't have.

One of the things I love most about marble and other natural stone is that they do not stay perfect. They age over time, telling the story of the home and the people who live there. That lived-in quality is part of their charm.

Even though natural stone requires more maintenance, it is the best timeless choice for your kitchen or bathroom.

Take a look at how we applied it in our Project Light and Bright Bathroom. We redesigned this room by applying a marble tile to the wall, which gives this space a luxurious, fresh, and inviting feel. It turned out to be the most functional and beautiful bathroom for everyday use.

Polished Nickel Finishes

I love brass and frequently use it in my projects, but if we're talking about finishes with lasting appeal, polished nickel is hard to beat.

It is warm and soft, and it works beautifully with different design styles. What’s even more important is that it has remained popular over time, making it the best choice for your kitchen or bathroom.

In fact, if you've ever stayed in a luxury hotel and admired the bathroom, there's a good chance you noticed polished nickel fixtures. It's refined, classic, and elegant.

In Project Warm & Timeless Traditional, we selected polished nickel to create a beautiful and classic bathroom remodel. We made each selection intentionally, keeping functionality and style in mind.

Wood

When it comes to flooring, I recommend selecting a light to medium-toned hardwood with neutral undertones.

Try to avoid flooring that leans heavily red, orange, or yellow, as those undertones can outdate a space. A neutral wood floor gives you a great base that can change and grow with your furnishings and decor over time.

In kitchens, I love layering a runner over hardwood floors to introduce texture, softness, and color.

For bathrooms, except the powder bath, stick with tile, and not a wood-look tile.

Take a look at what we did in Project Revere Pewter and Dreamy Kitchen, where we layered a light hardwood floor, elevating the overall look and enhancing the blue and brass details throughout.

Subway Tile

While you can be tempted to make a statement with tile, and I’m all for that, in moderation, in the kitchen, I like to stick with a timeless subway tile.

The reason behind it? Because it works. The subway tile in your kitchen should be simple, classic, and timeless. It needs to let other elements in the room shine while providing a clean backdrop that won't compete with your cabinetry, countertops, or lighting.

The key is choosing a style that complements the overall design rather than overwhelms it, just like we did in Project Tailored Transitional. The kitchen got new countertops, tile, lighting, hardware, and modern appliances, making it a bright, warm, and welcoming place.

Layers

A really great design will have layers. It makes a home feel designed professionally.

A beautiful kitchen or bathroom has the perfect combination of materials, textures, finishes, and lighting that work well together.

Lighting is especially important.

In a kitchen, I like to layer lighting in the following areas:

  • Recessed lighting for overall brightness
  • Pendants over the island
  • Under-cabinet lighting for task work
  • Chandeliers over breakfast tables
  • Sconces when appropriate

These layers improve functionality and create warmth and atmosphere.

The same concept applies to texture. Mixing different materials creates a space that feels balanced and inviting.

Take a sneak peek at the kitchen from one of our recent projects, where we added layers of lighting and texture, making the room look elegant, modern, and luxurious.

Timeless Doesn't Mean Boring

While timeless might be the opposite of trending, it really provides a strong foundation with materials and finishes that will still feel beautiful years from now. It provides a good starting point where you let your personality shine through elements like art, accessories, and color.

The most important thing is that your home should reflect you, and your ultimate goal should be to create a home that feels comfortable and beautiful and responds to your family's needs. And investing in these timeless elements for your kitchen and bathroom will give you a cohesive, beautiful home for years to come.
