Think of great design like a great pair of shoes. They not only need to look stunning but also fit you perfectly and be comfortable to wear. If they bother you when you walk, or don’t suit your style, no matter how expensive or gorgeous they are, it’s simply not going to work out.
In the same way,
when it comes to designing your home, we always look for two goals: functionality and style.
No matter how beautiful a space may look, if it doesn’t function well for everyday life, it isn’t a good design. Your home should reflect your personality, creating a cozy and personal space where you enjoy spending time.
At An Inspiring Home, we anchor every project on these two principles. In today’s blog post, we will discuss the importance of each one and how we implement them in our projects.
The Secret to a Great Design: Function and Style
Before we even start selecting colors or sourcing elements for your space, we consider functionality first. Our question for our clients is: How would you like this space to work for you?
This aspect is important because you want a home that works for you and not the other way around. For example, a busy family with school-aged children involved in activities and sports will have very different needs and priorities compared to a couple who are empty nesters.
Once we dive deeper into the functionality, the second goal is to consider our client’s style. Which colors and styles do they prefer, and what does their inspiration look like for their space?
Let’s take a deeper look at each one, and we will share examples of rooms where functionality and style matter.
Functionality Comes First
Every family is different. Some of our clients have young children while others have teenagers, and some have grandchildren that visit on occasion. Some love to entertain, while others prefer a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle.
All of these details matter, and they directly influence how we design a space.
The kitchen is one of the best examples of how functionality drives design.
For example:
- If you love to bake, we might design a dedicated baking station with cabinetry that accommodates your mixer and tools.
- If you host frequently, we may add double ovens to make entertaining easier.
- Many of our clients prefer drawers to traditional cabinets because they make it easier to access and organize everyday items.
For the kitchen in Project Modern Fairway Views, our clients dreamed of a large island for storage and seating several guests at parties, and we made that happen with brand new cabinetry.
The perimeter cabinets got a fresh coat of paint, new quartz countertops, a stunning blue backsplash, new brass cabinet hardware, and lighting.

And that’s just the beginning. From storage to layout, there are countless details that go into creating a kitchen that truly works.

Living Room Functionality
Living rooms also need to reflect how you actually live. We ask our clients questions like:
- Do you watch TV often?
- Do you entertain and need more seating?
- Do you need additional storage?
For many of our clients, built-ins are a great solution. Just adding a space for books, children’s toys, and media equipment will keep the room feeling organized and intentional.
In our
Project Refined Casual Living, we transformed an empty space into a cozy, color-packed living room, ideal for curling up in a chair to read or doing puzzles at the coffee table.
The Role of Lighting
Another element that’s a key part of functionality and sometimes overlooked is lighting.
There’s so much more to lighting than just recessed ceiling lights. A well-designed home includes layers of lighting that support function and style.
In a kitchen, we recommend including:
- under-cabinet lighting
- pendants over the island
- lighting over the sink
In a dining room, we recommend:
- a chandelier on a dimmer
- table lamps to create warmth and atmosphere.
Lighting also helps set the mood of a space throughout the day.
Take a look at what we did in
Project Modern Comfort: we incorporated layered lighting, featuring a luxurious capiz shell chandelier above the tub to add visual interest, while sconces flanking the vanity mirrors provide both practical illumination and a soft, flattering glow.
Style: The Key to a Timeless Space
Once functionality is in place, we focus on the second goal: style.
Every client wants something a little different, something that reflects their personality and the way they want their home to feel.
While Pinterest can be a great source of inspiration, our goal is never to copy and paste a design. They're simply inspiration to help us get going in the right design direction.
Some clients are attracted to calm, neutral spaces. Others love incorporating bold color and statement pieces. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
Regarding style, we recommend gathering some inspiration, being open-minded, trusting us as designers with the solutions we present, and asking as many questions as you like.

A Home That Feels Like You
At the end of the day, great design is about more than how a space looks; it’s about how it works for you and your family.
A well-designed home should:
- Support your daily routines
- Feel comfortable and inviting
- Give you a place to relax and recharge
- Make you feel excited to start your day
When functionality and style come together, the result is a home you’ll love to be in every day.
If you’re thinking about updating your home and want a space that feels both functional and beautifully designed, we’d love to help you get started.
