Blank Wall Design - Our Favorite Ways to Transform Your Space
Every home has blank walls, and while they offer a visual break between the rest of the design elements, they can also feel unfinished or lacking something special.
The good news is that there are many ways to bring your boring blank wall to life; it all depends on whether you want to try something new and bold or stick with the classic.
Here are our favorite ways to design a blank wall:
- Wallpaper
- Trim or molding
- Art
- Built-ins
Let's take a closer look at each item and share some before-and-after examples.
1. Wallpaper
This element is my favorite way to make your room stand out from the norm and create that wow effect.
Wallpaper adds texture and dimension to a space. You can use it in every room, from your bathroom to your bedroom, and even in specific spaces to create a statement.
The best thing about wallpaper is that you can personalize it to your needs; you can choose subtle, neutral, bold, or patterned designs, instantly elevating your walls.
Here’s a perfect example of what we did with this client.
Look at this project's previous pictures: a primary bedroom and a living room.
The living room had built-ins, which we love because they provide excellent storage and are a great way to make a statement; however, the built-ins felt a little bland. Our approach was to elevate this space by adding wallpaper to the back of the shelves to add a thoughtful and delicate detail.
We had a lot of space in the bedroom to play with, so the solution was to use wallpaper to completely transform the space and give it a sense of completion. We complemented with statement art and a mirror for a relaxed and high-end look!
I love how it turned out and cannot wait to show you the professional pictures, so stay tuned to the blog for the upcoming transformation!
2. Trim or Molding
Trim or molding is the way to go if you’re leaning towards a sophisticated but not overwhelming look.
These two elements can bring dimension to your room without overpowering it.
Our clients created
a custom wall with a modern trim for this primary bedroom statement wall. Then we added furnishings for a warm and cozy yet high-end feel.
Our clients already had beautiful board-and-batten detailing in place, but the space lacked character and purpose. We elevated it by painting a moody blue above the trim and layering in thoughtfully chosen furnishings. The result is a sophisticated, inviting room we absolutely love!
3. Art
Art is one of the easiest and most personal ways to design a blank wall. The most important thing to consider is the size.
You can use a large art piece or create a gallery wall; the key is to use large pieces to fill the space.
In my own living room—part of our
Give Me All the Blues project, we created a striking statement wall by layering two bold abstract art pieces over a soft, blue patterned wallpaper. The contrast brings just the right amount of drama, creating a perfectly balanced and visually compelling focal point.
You can still combine two elements and not overcrowd your space; you just need ideal guidance, which starts with having a designer on board to guide you on every decision and help you avoid costly mistakes.

4. Built-ins
Last but not least, built-ins are the way to go if you’re looking for a complete transformation while adding a functional element. One of my favorite things about built-ins is that they provide a focal point, making your room beautiful while also providing storage solutions for toys, magazines, books, or family games.
For our Modern Coastal Abode Project, our client contacted us to transform their space into a functional and modern design. If you look at the pictures here, you’ll see that the upper windows in that blank wall were not serving any purpose, so we removed them and included built-ins for an elevated look.
We created a wow effect by adding a navy grasscloth wallpaper and adding elements that reminded my clients of their favorite vacation spot.
If there’s one takeaway from this post, it’s this: don’t let your blank walls stay blank. With a little planning and the right design choices, they have the power to transform into standout features that reflect your personality and enhance your lifestyle.
