With Spring Break around the corner, all I can think about is getting some sun and down time. The feeling of walking in the sand barefoot and listening to the waves as you take some time for yourself is unbeatable! Having that mood in my mind inspired me to write this blog post and share with your one of my recent projects inspired by a
Modern Coastal Design. So, if you’re ready to get cozy from the comfort of your home and bring the ocean feeling inside, keep reading because this is a transformation you do not want to miss!

The Before
When my clients contacted me, they had one goal: to make their dining and living rooms cozy. They are a very busy family with young kids who wanted a kid-friendly space and a place to entertain. In fact, one of the first things they mentioned to me was that they were embarrassed to have people over because they had a collection of toys and personal things, which didn’t feel inviting.
During our design consultation, we chatted about their lifestyle and personality as a family. They mentioned that one of their favorite things to do as a family was go to the beach, plus they loved neutrals and navy colors. We decided a Modern Coastal inspired space would update their home beautifully. The shades of blue, neutral colors, and natural textures, combined with the lighting in this space, would transform their dining and living areas into a family haven.
Big Reveal
The goal was simple. With the design style in my mind, we started piecing together this project. Follow me as I reveal to you about each detail we chose.
Living Room
One of my favorite things in this space was the natural lighting.
The builder had placed some windows in the only wall suitable for a TV, so I suggested covering them up and adding some built-ins for extra storage space. Built-ins are perfect for creating a modern, organized look in a room. Plus, the navy wallpaper in the background was the ideal choice to create some contrast.
I'm a firm believer that the beauty is in the details, that's why we included ocean-related elements. Coral decor would remind my clients of their favorite vacation spot and make them feel relaxed and comfy after a long day at work!

We created a statement by including a live-edge mantel for added contrast. But, how cool is this frame TV? It is a one-of-a-kind piece that adds that WOW factor to the room.
My clients requested a fireplace for added warmth. We love this sleek, modern design.
We swapped out the ceiling fan for this simple yet elegant chandelier. It's the jewelry piece in the room and adds some much needed light in the evening.
I selected a piece of art to marry the living and dining space and remind my clients of their favorite vacation spot. The colors in this artwork transmit the peace and calmness of the ocean.

Now, onto the furniture.
For this project, I chose a soft gray, blue and white-washed rug to ground the furnishings. Performance fabrics on the sectional and side chairs are a must for a home with kids!
Design Tip: Toss the pillows that come with your sofa and add ones in your favorite colors. In this case we went with all shades of blue!
We definitely wanted to include light-colored wood pieces like you see in the occasional tables. The white-washed scalloped wood side table is one of my favorite pieces. It definitely makes a statement and is very kid-friendly.

With so many options to choose, what's your favorite thing about this living room makeover? Comment below!
Dining Room
Before starting this project, my clients mentioned that their dining chairs were falling apart, so they were looking for something more resistant and kid-friendly.
For this project, we chose a robust and resistant wood table, perfect to endure the wear and tear of everyday life. For the chair cushions, we also opted for a performance fabric that would clean easily. In addition, the navy frame of the chairs speak to the Modern Coastal Design. Just the perfect choice for this busy family!

Another detail you might spot is the drapes, which are custom-made as well. Not only do they help balance the whole room, but they give a wave-ocean effect.
We chose an indoor/outdoor rug for the dining space that also adds some great texture.
Design Tip: When selecting a rug for your dining table, make sure it's big enough so that all chairs are sitting on the rug when backed out.
Here's what my clients had to say about their project:
"From our initial meeting Jen understood our style and the ambiance we wanted to create for our home. She listened to everything we said (and didn’t say!) and created the most beautiful design for our living and dining areas."
I honestly can’t get over how different it looks and what a difference it makes to have an expert guide you along the way!
