Communication is a key ingredient for a successful design project; it sets the basis for a successful outcome. Being informed of how your design is progressing gives you peace of mind (most importantly) and information on the decisions you need to make. So, in today’s blog post, I share the behind-the-scenes of our communication process and how, what, and when we communicate with our clients. It’s a must-read if you’re thinking about starting a remodeling or design project.
Before starting, if your project involves renovating or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom,

Navigating the Design Journey: How, What, and When We Communicate With Clients
At An Inspiring Home, we believecommunication is the foundation of every successful interior design project. From the initial consultation to the final installation, clear and consistent communication with our clients, trades, and vendors ensures we understand every detail, address every challenge, and bring every vision to life with care and precision.
Especially if you’ve never worked with an interior designer before, it’s important to get a glimpse of what to expect before and during your design project:
- Before: We begin our process with a complimentary Zoom consultation, where we discuss your vision and understand your current needs to guide you through the right solution. This sets the tone for the rest of the project.
- During: We communicate openly throughout each stage and keep you informed of progress, challenges, and how we will address them to achieve our final goal.
That said, let’s navigate through our design journey and share all the important aspects of communication in an interior design project.
Setting Expectations Early
We establish clear communication from the start, and discuss the investment, timelines, style preferences, and functionality to help avoid misunderstandings later.
When someone contacts us, they receive a link to our investment guide, which includes information on how we work, furniture investment numbers, and what they can expect from our company.
We like to be transparent, avoid any surprises, and address challenges so our clients feel at ease that their project is in the best hands.
Collaborating with Trades and Vendors
Having a professional to help align contractors, suppliers, and vendors is a huge plus for avoiding delays and ensuring quality control.
At An Inspiring Home, we consider this aspect key. That’s why we only work with responsive, polite, and respectful tradespeople.
Our clients feel the difference between doing it all themselves and having the right help for their projects.
The Importance of Listening
Great communication isn’t just about speaking clearly—it's also about truly listening to our clients’ needs, values, and vision, which helps us get the project going in the right direction.
For example, our client requested that we keep the vanities, countertops, and floor tile intact in our Warm and Timeless Traditional project. Initially, this request was challenging because we were looking for a way to integrate them seamlessly with all of the new elements. With our design approach, we eliminated the half wall between the shower and tub and created a bench in the shower for added convenience.
The result? A timeless design. See the full before and after in our blog post here.
Navigating Changes and Challenges
Here’s the truth: every project has changes and challenges, whether product availability or client revisions. We are fully transparent about these changes to keep our projects running smoothly and professionally. Our job is to keep our clients informed so they have peace of mind that their project is in good hands.
For example, our client from our Classic Black & White Project requested to keep these two colors in their project. While our clients were out of town during the renovation, the painters accidentally swapped the paint colors between the two bathrooms. When they returned, the boys' bathroom was painted Smoky Blue by Sherwin-Williams (which was meant for the girls’ room). Luckily, our clients loved the color so much that we decided to keep it as is! We painted the girls' bathroom blue as planned, and both rooms turned out beautifully.

Visual Communication Tools
What clients love most is that we provide mood boards, 3D renderings, and detailed drawings to help them visualize our design concepts clearly and bridge any gaps in understanding.
This communication element is a great asset because it gets our clients excited about the project and results in fewer revisions later.
Regular Check-ins Build Trust
We love to keep in touch with our clients through weekly emails, where we share the progress of their project. This includes everything from backorders to construction progress, updated timelines, furnishings arrivals, upcoming meetings, and installs.
These scheduled updates, through emails, calls, or in-person meetings keep our clients informed and confident throughout the process.
Open communication builds trust, providing a great working relationship and an even better experience.
