White kitchens never go out of style, even though they’ve been trending for a while now. But which white do you choose? Did you even know there’s more than one option? Cool whites, warm whites, creamy whites, off-whites…the list goes on. You must choose your white carefully.
The first step in choosing your white (or any paint color) is to look at the existing finishes in your home (trim, flooring, counters, etc.). This will help you narrow down your options. After you’ve selected a few good matches, compare them side-by-side to make the best choice. Read on for my tips on choosing your perfect white.
I highly recommend reading The Ultimate Guide for Choosing the Perfect Paint Color for your Home to get started.
My favorite white paint colors for a classic and timeless kitchen
Let’s look at a few:
Sherwin Williams High Reflective White and Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace
o True whites, very crisp
o Chantilly Lace works well for a bright, modern kitchen
o Chantilly Lace is a good standard for comparing other whites
o High Reflective White is an excellent choice for painting your ceiling
Sherwin Williams Snowbound and Benjamin Moore Simply White
o Lovely, soft whites
o Favorites of mine for a white kitchen
o Simply White has a subtle touch of cream, while Snowbound has a hint of gray
o Both are great choices without being too stark
Sherwin Williams Eider White
o Very soft, light gray
o Almost looks white when painted on cabinetry
Sherwin Williams Alabaster and Benjamin Moore Cloud White
o Great choices for a creamy off-white
o Try one of these if you have earthy brown finishes but want a fresh update
If you have earthy brown finishes in your home, such as in your flooring or backsplash, a true white or off-white may not look right. This is the time to look for a cream.
Once again, you must hold the paint samples next to each other to see which one is creamier, grayer, or whiter. Make sense?
Of course, don’t forget to hold the paint color next to your countertop and backsplash in your kitchen to make sure you’ve made the right choice.
What about adding some variety? I’m working on two kitchen remodel projects right now, and both clients want white cabinetry for its classic feel. However, we are going to warm it up with a different color for the island. Take a look at these photos for inspiration.
These are great colors to add into your space while still having a classic, timeless white kitchen. What I love about these colors is the contrast and richness. I can’t wait to show you these projects so you can see how everything works together.
I love white kitchens. They’re clean and classic, and you won’t regret it down the road. Want to read more about kitchens? How to Modernize a Traditional Kitchen has some great tips.
