From dark and dated to light and bright!
Snowbound and Smoky Blue Kitchen
Have you ever thought about remodeling your kitchen, but didn’t know where to start? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Choosing finishes for a kitchen remodel can be time-consuming, stressful, and overwhelming. I recently finished a kitchen remodel for a client who didn’t feel confident in making selections on their own. Let me walk you through what we did.
The first thing we needed to address was function. My client didn’t use barstools, so we filled in the space with 12-inch-deep cabinets and added some trim on the end of the island. Now, there is some much-needed storage for the family, and the island looks more substantial.
For this kitchen, my client requested an updated, classic look that won’t look dated 10 years from now. They also wanted a white kitchen without looking too sterile. White kitchens have been trending in the design world lately, but they truly are timeless and never go out of style. This was the perfect choice for my client because the kitchen already had beautiful hardwood flooring that contrasts nicely with the white finishes and adds warmth to the room.
We chose a gorgeous off-white quartz with subtle veining and movement.
I chose a classic 3x12 inch subway tile. This tile has a hand-crafted look and will look great for years to come. By choosing a light, warm, gray grout color, we were able to highlight the subway tile just slightly.

We chose some beautiful colors for the space. For the perimeter cabinets, we used Snowbound, and for the island, we used Smoky Blue. And by painting the walls with Accessible Beige, we were able to add more warmth. (all paints by Sherwin Williams)
We added a faux roman shade to the kitchen window to add softness.
New black iron lantern pendants, a classic look, and black drapery hardware. Just a touch of black is all this space needs. Because I like to mix my finishes, we replaced the cabinet hardware for something more modern in a brushed nickel finish.

Tip: Always take a look at your samples including paint colors in the space you will be remodeling. It's important to see how they look with your existing finishes and colors
Window treatments made a big difference in this kitchen. Prior to our remodel, the client had just one drape to pull across the sliding door to block the sun. We swapped that out for these pretty blue drapes and hung them higher for a more high-end look.
When styling a white kitchen, I always like to bring in wood elements to warm it up, and some greenery for a fresh touch. I like to use just a few accessories. The more functional, the better, so that there’s plenty of space for meal prep and cooking.
See the design board below for this project.
