Welcome back to the One Room Challenge! I’m excited to share some of the progress we’ve made in this room.
While working out a plan for my daughter’s bedroom makeover, we decided to use plug-in wall sconces in lieu of table lamps for bedside lighting. This post is all about plug-in wall sconces and why you might choose this option over a hardwired sconce. Plus, I’ve rounded up my favorites for you below.

WHY YOU WOULD WANT TO USE A PLUG-IN WALL SCONCE
With a hardwired sconce you’ll need an electrician to install. This option is best if you are using sconces in a prominent location where you don’t want to see any cords. Fireplaces, dining rooms, stairways, bathrooms are just some locations where a hardwired sconce is ideal.
With a plug-in wall sconce, you don’t need an electrician, just an outlet to plug it into and someone who can use a drill and follow the instructions to install on a wall. It’s pretty easy. This option is generally more budget-friendly. And since it’s not permanent, you can change you mind later if you need something else.
Not only does a sconce provide an extra layer of light, but it makes a statement.
WHERE TO USE PLUG-IN SCONCES?
Use above a nightstand right next to the headboard. This option frees up the space on your nightstand. I love this look in a bedroom.
Install one above a piece of art to illuminate the art as well as draw your eye up the wall. This will make your ceiling feel taller.

Using a sconce above a wall shelf or bookshelf highlights the items on the shelves.
Maybe you have a little reading corner with a chair and small table. All you need is an outlet on the wall. Install your sconce per the instructions and then plug it into the wall.

In the case of my daughter’s bedroom, we are doing built-in bookshelves on either side of the bed, which doesn’t leave room for a nightstand. Plug-in wall sconces are perfect for this situation.
Ready to see which one I chose?
Special thanks to my assistant (my son!) for holding this sconce in place while I snapped a quick pic! We’re not quite ready to install the sconces since we still have to install the bookshelves.
Here’s a little peek at the bookshelves in their current state. I’m hoping to get these built into the wall this weekend and then I’ll be adding some trim. I will have a full tutorial on how we do this coming up!
