Has it ever happened to you that you walk into a space and feel a sense of calm? It turns out there’s more to Interior Design than meets the eye. It’s all rooted in Neuroaesthetics. In this blog post, we’ll explore this concept further and how it helps to enhance your overall well-being.
A Deeper Dive into Interior Design: Neuroaesthetics
As an Interior Designer with an architectural background, I know that a well-organized space can help you feel better and reduce stress and overwhelm. An intentional design creates harmony and balance, making you feel comfortable in your home. Today, I want to talk about the key design elements that elevate the power of neuroaesthetics to enhance our lives.
But let’s start by defining neuroaesthetics.
Neuroaesthetics is a field of study that explores how the brain perceives, processes, and responds to art, beauty, and design. It seeks to understand the psychological effects of aesthetic experiences on human behavior and well-being.
When designing a room, it’s important to bring neuroaesthetics into the plan because it allows us to:
- Create a unique experience for our clients. Neuroaesthetics allows us to design spaces according to our client's needs and preferences and optimize the experience for comfort, well-being, and productivity.
- Promote stress reduction and relaxation. Research shows that pleasing environments can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and promote relaxation.
- Increase a positive mood and productivity. Aesthetically pleasing spaces help improve mood, increase creativity, and enhance productivity.
- Support for healing and well-being. Neuroaesthetics are crucial in supporting healing processes and improving patient outcomes in healthcare environments.
At An Inspiring Home, we adapt neuroaesthetics as a part of our design process. We offer an opportunity for you to love your space again with a comprehensive and personally tailored design experience. So, if you’re looking for the right hand to help you create a space that speaks to your personality, book a call with us here to find out more.
Now that you’re caught up with this concept, let’s focus on some vital aspects of Neuroaesthetics and Interior Design.
Design with Intention
Designing with intention refers to creating a space that responds to your needs, wants, and lifestyle while considering the architectural design of your home. Because all homes come in different shapes and forms, it’s essential to consider the elements of each space and personalize them in a way that you like and find useful.
For example, in one of our recent projects, Warm and Timeless Traditional, we encountered the challenge of finding a rug for an oddly shaped room. Our approach was to go with a custom-cut wool rug that gave the room the feeling of completion.
While you may have a vision in mind, you need to look at the big picture and consider your home's architectural finishes. Knowing what will look good and fit your design style is more than following trends; it means adapting your current space and transforming it into something that will resonate with your lifestyle and personality.
The Power of Natural Light
One vital element in interior design is natural light. By including natural light into our spaces, we create brighter, more inviting rooms that uplift our moods. In our design approach, we always consider increasing natural lighting through some vital aspects, such as:
- Paint: Light colors and neutrals enhance the lighting and create an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere.
- Mirrors: I love decorating with mirrors because they increase natural light. A secret is to place them strategically, such as across windows, to improve the natural lighting in a room or arrange them to reflect the artificial lighting.
- Window treatments: Custom window treatments add that final touch to your space and help control the lighting to showcase all the elements in your room.
In our
Modern Coastal Abode Project, we wanted to add some elements that reminded my clients of their favorite vacation spots. These custom window treatments are the perfect addition to create an inviting room for entertaining or family time. Our client said best: “From our initial meeting, An Inspiring Home understood our style and the ambiance we wanted to create for our home.”
Decluttering and Purposeful Design
When it comes to interior design, less is more. Cluttered spaces promote stress and overwhelm and decrease productivity.
Our primary goal in our design approach and process is to provide a space that integrates and facilitates your lifestyle by focusing on vital aspects, such as:
- Built-ins that seamlessly offer storage solutions.
- A well-appointed kitchen where every element serves a purpose.
- Fewer but intentional accessories that add personality and charm without overwhelming the space.
For example, in our Refined Casual Living Project, the living room space didn’t serve a purpose nor felt inviting; however, it had many opportunities to transform into a cozy place. The solution was easy: update the space with color to provide contrast and transform it into a sitting lounge where my client could curl up in a chair and read or do puzzles at the coffee table.

Bringing the Outdoors In
Did you know that people in nursing homes with plants live longer than those without? This is all due to the healing power of plants. Plants not only purify the air but are also visually appealing in rooms and contribute to our overall well-being by reducing stress and boosting our mood.
That’s why I love to incorporate greenery into my designs; they look good and create a perfect balance.
I added some greenery to my home office design,
Give Me All The Blues Project, to make a statement and help me become more creative and productive while keeping me grounded on my work goals.
Incorporating Neuroaesthetics allows us to create spaces that look good on the outside while increasing our well-being on a deeper level, where every element plays a vital role in shaping our homes.
