Recently, I have had some clients ask me about pendant lighting for their kitchen. It can be an easy update yet overwhelming decision. If you want to update your kitchen or you are building a new home, then I have created the ultimate guide to pendant lighting for your kitchen.
With so many choices of all styles, shapes and sizes, it can be a bit intimidating. Plus there is no one size fits all kitchen islands since those come in all shapes and sizes as well. So, how do you choose?

When designing a kitchen, you want to think about layers of lighting. You probably have some type ceiling lights, recessed or flush mount. Under-cabinet lighting is also highly recommended. If you have an island, you’ll want to add some type of pendant lighting. Adding this layer of light not only acts as an accent piece over the island, but it illuminates the area for kitchen prep work. It draws attention to the island and makes it a centerpiece of the kitchen.
Often in new home builds, I see lights are that rather small for the island. Many builders will select a light that works but not the best size. I always say go bigger, but how many? Do you need 2 or 3? That depends on the size of your island and the size of your pendants. 2 pendants is usually sufficient unless your island is extra long, then I say go with 3. Check out my guide below for spacing your pendants over the island.
I
like pendant lights to make a statement in the kitchen. They are the jewelry in your kitchen. Look at the style of your kitchen and decide what kind of statement you want to make. Maybe you want a punch of color in an all white kitchen. Choose one with clear glass if you don’t want to block a view. A gold light fixture makes a great statement in a black and white kitchen. One of my favorite pendant lights is a lantern style. They are a classic style and will work with any kitchen.
I always recommend pendant lights over a kitchen island. Imagine taking away all of the pendants in the above images. It just isn’t the same without. Ultimately, I want you to choose a light that you will love in your kitchen.
TIP: If you have low ceilings (8′) then use a lantern style pendant light or one that you can see through.
Want to add softness and warmth to your kitchen? Try pendants made of a natural, woven texture. With a high ceiling like this one you will want a bigger pendant.
There you have it – the ultimate guide to pendant lighting for your kitchen. You should feel more confident in choosing a pendant light and how many. I’ve rounded up my favorite kitchen island pendant lights to help you choose for your kitchen.
