The Best Living Room Decor Tips
February 14, 2020

Right now Pottery Barn is having a Presidents Day sale, like most retailers! I love Pottery Barn’s products. They are classic, great quality and stand the test of time. Today, I thought I would share with you the best living room decor tips plus some great furnishings from Pottery Barn.

Living Room Decor Tips

TIP #1

Have a plan. This goes for any room in your home. When you have a plan, you know what size you’re looking for as well as the color, style, etc. Then you can go to a retailer and tell them exactly what you’re looking for and they can show you some options. You should know where you are going to place the sofa in your living room and what size it needs to be.

This is an example of a design board I created for a client. A design board or mood board provides a visual for what’s going into a room.

TIP #2

Don’t buy a matching sofa and love seat or all matching tables for that matter. Mix it up! When buying furniture, you want your home to be a reflection of you, not the furniture store. Yes, it’s ok to buy a leather sofa and one in a neutral fabric. Maybe you’re considering a sectional, or a sofa plus two club chairs or maybe you’d like an ottoman for a coffee table. Mix and match for the look or style you want to have.

This design board is created with some classic Pottery Barn furnishings. Notice the mix of the twill fabric sofa with the wood and leather chairs. Then I suggested an iron and wood coffee table with an iron and glass end table. I even mixed the lamps on either side of the sofa.

TIP #3

Toss the free pillows! Yes, I said it. Give them to your kiddos for the playroom. I like to bring in color, texture and pattern with pillows, and it will give your room more of a high-end look if we’re not using the matching sofa pillows.

See this blog post for more pillow design board ideas.

TIP #4

Texture. Texture adds character and coziness to a space. Bring in several textures with a rug, pillows, drapes, baskets and accessories.  Here’s a list of different textures for you to consider: cotton, linen, wool, leather, wood, metal, and glass.

TIP #5

Have at least one plant.  Live plants are best, but faux is the next best thing, and there are so many realistic looking faux plants. These add life to a room, not to mention the live ones are healthy for the air.
