Casual Family Room With a Modern Farmhouse Touch
September 26, 2019

My clients are busy parents of three children and wanted a casual family room with a modern farmhouse touch that was kid-friendly where they can relax and be comfortable, yet they wanted a furnished room that felt pulled together. Lots of natural light comes in this room throughout the day.

The shiplap brings a layer of texture and that classic farmhouse feel to the room. I suggested the round mirror to balance out all the straight lines from the shiplap and the shelves.

SHIPLAP WALL

These shelves are awesome, and I was impressed by the quality. The use of metal and wood adds adds an industrial element, which ties in well with farmhouse design. I shopped my client’s home for some of the decor and styled these shelves as seen here in the photo. Other decor was purchased locally at Homegoods and Pier 1.

TV WALL

See this post on how to decorate around a tv.

This large flatscreen television is on a very large wall. My client didn’t want a large entertainment center, so this console does the job. It has a rustic feel which works well with our modern farmhouse style. The 16×20 framed gallery pictures help to fill in the space around the television while also keeping a clean look. The family room is the perfect spot for family photos!

CASUAL FAMILY ROOM MODERN FARMHOUSE

Here is another look at the television/gallery wall from another point of view. The gallery frames are wood and have gray and brown tones which help keep the casual feeling in this room. The reading chair in the corner is the perfect spot to curl up with a book.

When designing a family room, I like to use sectionals. Sectionals are great for families with children because there’s lots of room for cuddling on the sofa. With the large tv and sectional this room makes for great movie nights! The kid-friendly ottoman serves dual purpose. It can be used as a comfy spot to prop up your feet as well as a place to corral items on top in a tray. The ottoman can also be used for extra seating when entertaining large groups. With 3 young children, I just added a few pillows to the sectional. These pillows bring in color, pattern and texture adding to the coziness of the room.

THE DETAILS

Don’t forget accessories when putting a room together. Distressed candle holders, patterned vases, and even faux plants are the cherry on top for a well-designed room. Baskets not only bring texture but also provide extra storage for pillows and blankets. Thank you for taking a tour of this casual family room with a modern farmhouse touch.
