How to Create a Light and Airy Home
July 14, 2020

Do you want to lighten and brighten your home? Gone are the days of a room filled with all heavy and dark furnishings. Let me show you how to create a light and airy home.

If you know me, you know I like to mix and match colors, textures, furnishings and styles. So, I’m going to show you how to bring in some light and airy furnishings that will mix and match with what you already have.

When I say heavy furnishings, I mean visually heavy meaning it’s dark or thick and chunky or masculine feeling. While there is nothing wrong with that, it’s good to have a balance. I like to bring in items that will help visually lighten the room.

HOW TO CREATE A LIGHT AND AIRY HOME

ACRYLIC FURNISHINGS

CB2 Acrylic Console Table

I love this acrylic console table from CB2. Even though the walls are painted black this table brings a light and airy feeling to the space. This table is perfect for a narrow entry where you don’t have a lot of space but still need a place to set things. Now, imagine a dark, wooden console table here -wouldn’t work as well.

In this kitchen, my client wanted a light, bright and more contemporary space. After painting the walls and cabinets, I sourced these acrylic bar stools for the island. You can’t see, but there is another island just behind this one to the left. The acrylic bar stools are the perfect answer to a narrow space and they help visually lighten the kitchen.

METALS

This brushed nickel light fixture, the black metal drapery rod as well as the white drapes add to the airiness of this breakfast nook. See more of this casual breakfast nook.

Studio McGee

The metal framed mirror as well as the use of other metals in this Studio McGee bathroom lend to the light and airy feel of the space.

WOVEN MATERIALS

When I think light and airy I think Serena and Lily. Their woven dining chairs are some of my favorite. I’ll take this setup right here!

Note: woven textures plus metal light fixture plus the white walls equals light and airy. If you like Serena and Lily as much as I do, check out this blog post with my Serena and Lily favorites.

Another really cute and affordable option is this woven dining chair from Target.

I love the woven texture plus the clean lines of this modern furniture.

WHITE OR LIGHT COLORED FABRICS

I love a light and airy bedroom. It just says “relax” to me. One way to do that is by using a white duvet or comforter.

Keep it light and bright by using white or light colored pillows as seen here in this modern teen bedroom.

White bedding for the tween bedroom makeover as well!

PAINT

Want to see the difference paint can make in a room? Check out this before and after.

Paint can totally transform a room, and sometimes that’s all you need is a lighter color on the wall or kitchen cabinets. You can also see where I swapped out the dark and heavy framed art for a lighter metal framed mirror above the fireplace.

Here’s the bottom line. Mix your materials: wood + metal, add some acrylic or glass accessories, choose light paint colors and fabrics. That’s it! 5 tips for how to create a light and airy home. Thanks for stopping by!
